Abstract
Therapeutic plasma exchange is well established as a treatment modality in a variety of diseases. To investigate the application and safety of this procedure we evaluated all patients receiving plasma exchange at Dong-A University Hospital from
March
1990 to March 1995 using Haemonetics V50 Plus.
A total of 18 patients including 10 with Guillain-Barre syndrome, 7 with myasthenia gravis, and 1 with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) underwent 62 plasma exchanges. The mean amount of plasma exchanged was 4,870ml and the number of exchange per
patient was 3.4. The most frequent complications were associated with vascular access. Symptoms of hypocalcemia, hypovolemia, and reactions to replacement fluids also observed.
Plasma exchange appears to be safe and efficacious in the management of many diseases, especially if combined with the immunoadsorption plasmapheresis.
